Pchum Ben Festival

Along with Khmer New Year in April, Phchum Ben is the most significant festival in the Cambodia which has been celebrated in every October. The festival lasts for 15 days, but only the final day is the biggest celebration and is the public holiday. Cambodians have faithfully observed the festival each year for as long as anyone can remember.  Regardless how busy they may be the Phchum Ben days, Cambodians try to go to the pagoda to dedicate food and offerings to the dead. The festival's final day is the actual Phchum Ben when people visit the pagoda to show respect for their ancestors.  Cambodian people feel sorry for and remember their relatives who have passed away. They may be their grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, daughters or sons. During Phchum Ben spirits come to receive offerings from their relatives. It is believed that some of the dead were punished for their sins and burnt in hell and tortured there. Those souls and spirits have no food to ...

Khmer Traditional Game: “Sdarch Chorng”

“Sdarch Chorng” or is a game that children or teens always play under the moon light. The number of players are not limited. The players are divided into two groups, a group of boys and a group of girls. How to Play One of the players was selected to be the king sitting on a chair or something tall. When he sat on the appropriate place, one of the girls came to whisper to the king that she loved one of the boys then returned to the group. The boy also had to go to the king, if not by name he was whispered earlier, he could whisper to the king as the girl did. But if he was the one who on the name that was whispered, the king would shout, “Eiv Eiv!” Which means “carrying things” and gave that girl a ride on the back of the boy and came to group. When riding, they shout, “Eiv Eiv!” And they will bear down. They shift whispered to the king until they decided to stop playing. The King is to oversee this with truth and justice. The game is up to the one who do as the king. I...

Angkor Panorama Museum

In a large parking zone outside Cambodia's celebrated Angkor Wat temples complex stands a brand new museum built by North Korea, a part of a lucrative charm offensive by a hermit state exporting its monumental art to a handful of foreign allies. "They feel like they're back in the time of Angkor", said Yit Chandaroat, of the Angkor Panorama, relating the world heritage site that includes the remains of the various capitals of the Khmer Empire, dating from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. Behind him stands the museum's piece Diamond State resistance, a huge 360-degree panorama that sixty three North Korean painters from the state-owned Mansudae Art Studio toiled away on for more than a year. The paintings portray the battles of the direful Khmer Empire at the apogee of its power in the eleventh and thirteenth centuries and the construction of Angkor Wat. The museum is over a friendly gesture. With 1,000 artists on the books the studio is usual...

An investigation into sugar corporations

In January 2015, the EU employed 2 consultants to carry out an investigation into allegations of forced evictions by sugar corporations doing business with the alinement, however the results of that probe have yet to be made public. The delegation in Cambodia sent a press release to the Post, that said it absolutely was “clear that the issues on the chance of attainable accusations of guiltiness with alleged land grabbing and human rights abuses associated with sugar cane production in Kingdom of Cambodia is discouraging EU importers to supply from Cambodia, and the private sector to further invest in this trade.” Calls by Anadolu Agency to David Pred, managing director of inclusive Development International, and Eang Vuthy, executive director of equitable Cambodia, were unsuccessful on Tuesday. Both NGOs are part of a coalition that originated what's called the “Clean Sugar” campaign in 2011 that place pressure on the Thai MitrPhol and Khon Kaen Sugar business firms,...

Cambodia's minorities education

Cambodia's marginalized indigenous populations are steady gaining opportunities due to a replacement trilingual education programs. Now, the government is starting to expand the comprehensive efforts. Twelve-year-old Chhean Srey methamphetamine hydrochloride dreams of being an instructor once she grows up. It’s a goal that currently, because of a sweeping and innovative education program, is accessible. Srey meth attends a straightforward, three-room school in Cambodia's Kratie province where she, together with some seventy different students of Phnong ethnicity, benefits from multilingual education. The students begin learning in their first language before the national language of Khmer is step by step phased into the course of study. This is a forceful sendoff from the past. In Cambodia, ethnic minorities have long been obstructed from education. The long distance to travel to school was a deterrence, and people who did attend usually faced discriminat...

Khmer Riels and the U.S. Dollar in Cambodian Society

Unlike neighboring Vietnam, Cambodia has so far kept away from forcing businesses and other people to use the riel for concern of destabilizing an economy less than 0.2 percent the scale of China’s. Its standing as Asia’s “most dollarized” country leaves it at risk of changes in U.S. monetary policy and erodes export competitiveness because the dollar strengthens, according to the IMF. Policy makers are currently making an attempt to vary that. They’re counting on an economy that’s forecast to grow quicker than China’s to win trust in the local currency. Government salaries, taxes and utilities are paid in riel and the 3 stocks listed on the Cambodia Securities Exchange trade in it. The central bank has conjointly improved the standard of currency notes to encourage their use. The dollar effectively replaced the riel once the Khmer Rouge abolished money and blew up the central bank during a communist revolution that killed around 1.7 million people from 1975 to 1979, exploi...

Business Opportunities in Cambodia

Cambodia is a developing market economy that grew at an average rate of over seven percent in the last decade, driven largely by an expansion in the garment sector, construction, agriculture, and tourism. In 2014, the economy grew by an estimated seven percent and it is expected to continue to grow at a similar rate over the next two years. Per capita GDP increased from US$367 in 2003 to US$1,130 in 2014. As of 2012, the percentage of the population living below the poverty line was 17.7 percent (poverty line was US$1.20 per person per day), a three percent decrease from 2011. Since Cambodia became the first least-developed country (LDC) to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2004, trade has steadily increased. The United States is one of Cambodia’s largest trading partners. Approximately 33 percent of Cambodia’s total exports are destined for the United States - primarily garment and footwear products. In 2014, Cambodian exports to the United States were valued at US$2.8...

U.S. supports $1 million for food project to empower Cambodian women

Funding for the $1 million project, titled Women in Agriculture Network Cambodia: Gender and Ecologically Sensitive Agriculture, was awarded by the Feed the Future Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab, which is based at Kansas State University. The program is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development as part of Feed the Future, the U.S. government's global hunger and food security initiative. Smallholder farmers produce nearly half of the world's food, but they often have notoriously low yields, strong gendered divisions of labor and limited financial resources, according to lead investigator Rick Bates, professor of horticulture at Penn State. "Small-scale farming systems such as these -- prevalent in many developing countries -- have been called 'very resilient poverty traps' that are characterized by chronic food and nutrition insecurity," said Bates, whose expertise includes horticulture enterprise development and sustainab...

Cambodian authorities apprehended more than 100 Chinese

Radio Free Asia: Cambodian authorities on Wednesday apprehended more than 100 Chinese who allegedly were involved in a scam to extort money from people in China during a raid on a casino in a northwestern border town, a Cambodian police official said. Authorities also confiscated several Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephones, mobile phones and other related technology during the raid on the casino, which is owned by Cambodian senator and business tycoon Kok An of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), according to local media reports. Cambodian authorities arrested a group of 168 Chinese nationals early last November in Sihanoukville province in the southwestern part of the country, nabbing them in a sting operation for using VoIP technology to extort money from hundreds of people back home. Business Registration Process

For investors seeking investment incentives, such as a tax holiday and lower corporate profit taxes, it is first necessary to apply to the Cambodian Investment Board for an investment license and award of the various available incentives. In the interest of space, the steps necessary in order to make this application are not included here. Ministry of Commerce Any person or group of persons "doing business" must register with the Ministry of Commerce. While there is no particular definition of "doing business", it will usually be obvious when this applies. Registration at the Ministry of Commerce requires filing the company statutes. These are known by various names in various countries and some readers may be more familiar with the term Memorandum and Articles of Association or Certificate of Incorporation and company by-laws. They all serve the same purpose; that is, they state who owns the company, who are the directors, who are the shareholders and ho...

Cambodia: Opportunities and the Challenges for Long-Term Socioeconomic Strategy

As the Government of Cambodia continues to build on strong growth and address emerging challenges, this publication examines the opportunities and the challenges, and offers recommendations for long-term socioeconomic strategy. During the last 2 decades, Cambodia achieved remarkable economic growth and development—its gross domestic product (GDP) has expanded at an average 7.6% a year since 1995. The country seized growth opportunities from its rich natural resources and the evolving dynamics of the regional and global economy. It effectively leveraged its land and water resources to steadily boost agricultural production, particularly rice, making Cambodia the world’s eighth-largest rice producer. Cambodia is also Asia’s 10th largest garment exporter, a position it was able to reach by taking advantage of a global quota regime and the search by garment producers for new low-cost production sites. In addition, Cambodia’s unique cultural heritage has helped it make its mark as a...

Cambodia: Skills Needed for Sustainable Developement

While Cambodia has more than halved the number of people living below the national poverty line in just 5 years, the bulk of its labor force is still employed in the informal economy or in vulnerable employment and 71% of the population lives on less than $3 a day. “ Most of the country’s labor force is young but often not equipped with skills that match business needs, so the challenge for policymakers is to address this gap and mismatch ,” said ADB Chief Economist Shang-Jin Wei. “ Developing a more educated, employable, and productive workforce is essential for Cambodia to broaden its economy beyond the current four mainstays of garment manufacturing, tourism, construction and agriculture and to sustain high growth .” Tackling the skills gap and mismatch requires action on many fronts including increasing access to quality education and mid–level skills vocational training; upgrading competencies of underqualified teachers; promoting input on skills training from the privat...

Cambodian Economics Performance

Cambodia’s growth in exports and tourism slowed down in the first half of 2015, though domestic demand is holding up supported by an expansion of credit to the private sector. Shipments of garments and footwear produced in Cambodia rose by 11.0% year on year, decelerating from 14.5% in the first half of 2014. Growth in total merchandise exports moderated to 14.0% from 18.3%. As for tourist arrivals, the rate of increase slowed to 4.6% in the first half from 5.2% a year earlier. Agriculture is suffering from an extended period of low rainfall. However, data indicate that domestic demand is holding up, based on 33.3% year on year expansion of credit to the private sector in May and indications of high growth in imports. While the expansion of garment manufacturing, construction, and services—in particular tourism, finance, and real estate services— continues to drive growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the pace in the garment and tourism industries seems to have moderated....

How Technology Improves Cambodia

Over the last ten years, Cambodia has benefitted from tremendous economic growth, mainly from its agriculture, garment, construction, and tourism sectors. As an economy develops, technology often becomes a catalyst to this growth, which goes to the heart of a recent question from a reader who asked, “How can technology benefit a small, developing country like Cambodia?”  As one of the fastest growing sectors in Cambodia, technology is already benefitting the nation. One out of every six businesses launched in 2011 were part of the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. Mobile phone and Internet use have led this surge. Today, the number of mobile subscriptions in Cambodia exceeds the population. In 2012, Internet usage increased by almost 60 percent, jumping from 1.7 million users to 2.7 million users. The increase of mobile and Internet users in Cambodia means there is enormous potential for business growth and employment opportunities in the technology...

Joint Venture Agreement Terminated in “The Bay” Condominium and Hotel Project

The convicted businessman’s firm, Sok Bun Group, was a 51 per cent partner in Teho Cambodia, which, according to the filing, will now be transferred to Yim Chhay Line, who is the daughter of Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly and was appointed board director after Bun’s resignation last July. “The joint venture agreement shall be terminated with mutual consent and each party is released from its obligations under the agreement,” the filing read. “Sok Bun agrees to transfer 510 ordinary shares representing 51 per cent of the total issued share capital of the joint venture to Mrs Yim Chhay Line.” Kevin Goos, CEO of Century 21 Cambodia, said the termination of the joint venture agreement will help Teho jumpstart its efforts to rebrand and increase sales in Cambodia, adding that the Sok Bun episode hurt their image in the country. Vesakha or Bon Visak Bochea

Vesākha or Bon Visak Bochea day, in Khmer language, falls on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 6th lunar month, which is usually May in the Gregorian calendar. On Vesākha day, devout Buddhists and followers alike are expected and requested to assemble in their various temples before dawn for the ceremonial, and honorable, hoisting of the Buddhist flag and the singing of hymns in praise of the holy triple gem: The Buddha, The Dharma (his teachings), and The Sangha (his disciples). Devotees may bring simple offerings of flowers, candles and joss-sticks to lay at the feet of their teacher. These symbolic offerings are to remind followers that just as the beautiful flowers would wither away after a short while and the candles and joss-sticks would soon burn out, so too is life subject to decay and destruction. Devotees are enjoined to make a special effort to refrain from killing of any kind. They are encouraged to partake of vegetarian food for the day. During the ce...

Khmer New Year

Khmer New Year is the traditional religious festival and national holiday in Cambodia. The three days celebration, Khmer New year starts in mid April based on the ancient horoscope “Maha Sangkran”. This festival marks the end of the harvest season when farmers enjoy the fruits of their labor and relax before the start of the rainy season. The first day of Khmer New Year is called “Maha Sangkran”, Sangkran means movement and refers to that the sun is moving into a new Zodiac sign and Maha means great. In the morning the Cambodians will go to the temple and offer food to the monks and receive blessings. Elderly people like to meditate or pray the Dharma because they believe that any spirit that comes to their home will stay with them throughout the whole year and take care of their family. The second day is called “Wanabot” and it is the day that they offer gifts to parents, grandparents and elders. In the evening of this day many Cambodians will go to...

Cambodian Wedding Ceremony

Cambodian weddings are long and intricate affairs that consist of multiple ceremonies and songs. Below are examples of programs used at two different Khmer weddings to help explain to guests some of the customs and meanings behind the various activities and performances that take place. Although regional and personal differences in wedding rituals do exist, both these programs detail the key elements of traditional Khmer weddings. Cambodian weddings traditionally consist of ceremonies and celebrations lasting three days and three nights. Three is considered to be an especially auspicious number by Cambodians because of its association with the “three jewels” of Buddhism: the Buddha, the Sangha (brotherhood of monks), and the Dhamma (the Buddha’s teachings). Due to the demands of modern day life however, today, both in Cambodia and overseas, all the following wedding ceremonies are usually completed in just one day. Readmore .
